TWICKENHAM MUSEUM

Reveals some of the history of Twickenham, Whitton, Teddington and the Hamptons. These villages, surrounding the Victorian Villa and situated by the River Thames to the south-west of London, have a rich history going back thousands of years. See: twickenham-museum.org.uk

BUSHY PARK

Bushy Park belongs to the Queen and extends over about 450 hectares and is home to freely roaming deer. One beautiful feature is Chestnut Avenue, a grand avenue of horse-chestnut trees close to the road and lime trees further out. This dates from the 1690s, and was part of Christopher Wren's plan for an aggrandizement of Hampton Court Palace. The avenue is a well used component of the suburban road system, but somehow this doesn't spoil the park when cars are creeping along, their drivers wary of both deer and radar.

Hard to imagine a half-century later, but SHAEF was based in Bushy Park from 1944, and Eisenhower planned Operation Overlord from here. See: royalparks.org.uk

Local Attractions

HAMPTON COURT PALACE

One of the most famous local attractions is Hampton Court Palace with its 500 years of royal history. Set in sixty acres of world famous gardens the Palace is a living tapestry of history from Henry VIII to George II. From the elegance of the recently restored eighteenth century Privy Garden to the domestic reality of the Tudor Kitchens visitors are taken back through the centuries to experience the Palace as it was when royalty was in residence.

Costumed guides and audio tours provide inside information on the life in the royal households and free family trails encourage a closer look at the Palace, with the chance of a prize at the end. In the summer months horse-drawn carriages offer a sedate trip around the stunning gardens.

Every year the Hampton Court Flower Show attracts people from all over the world. See link: rhs.org.uk

There is also the Hampton Court Ice Rink open from 28 Nov 2009 - 10 Jan 2010 See: hamptoncourticerink.com
